Residents of Miskin Benefit from Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Mon, 09/01/2012 - 10:24

The Gas Safety Trust has donated 100 carbon monoxide detectors to homes in South Wales through the Miskin Safety Crime and Prevention Group.

The group, which aims to make their area a safe and pleasant place to live, distributed the safety devices to local residents on Friday 25th November and Saturday 26th November at the Miskin Community Centre.

Esther Edwards from the Welsh Government’s Heads of the Valleys Programme, who volunteered to help the group apply for the funding from the Gas Safety Trust, joined them in handing out the alarms.

Myra Davies, Chairperson of the community group said; “By working in partnership with the Gas Safety Trust we’ve been able to make a positive difference and help people feel safer in their homes”.

Chris Bielby, Chair of The Gas Safety Trust commented; “With the help of Sprue Safety Products we were delighted to be able to provide the alarms to the residents of Miskin. Audible carbon monoxide alarms play a vital role in saving people from serious injury and death from carbon monoxide poisoning”.

The Gas Safety Trust says further awareness activity is also needed to increase the proportion of households with a CO alarm, given the role of alarms in saving people from serious injury and death.

In a recent survey, of the people questioned who owned an alarm 60% revealed that it had yet to be installed.

10% had had bought the cheaper less effective ‘black spot’ detectors – which are often inaccurate and will not alert you to the presence of carbon monoxide if you are out of the room, asleep or unconscious.

About The Gas Safety Trust

The Gas Safety Trust, established in 2005 as a registered charitable body, has become the UK’s leading gas safety charity with the key objectives of further improving gas safety for the public and industry throughout the United Kingdom and reducing the incidents of death and serious injury from carbon monoxide exposure.

One of the Trust’s key roles is the provision of evidence relating to the killer issue of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the home environment. The annual publication of the official CO incident figures and the Hotspot Report are both funded by the Trust. Their purpose is to provide Government, consumer groups, health & safety agencies, the gas industry and all its many stakeholders as well as the media with the latest data and insight on CO poisoning in the UK.
