The 2011 Report utilises two pieces of research to investigate and measure both actual incidents and the potential vulnerability of the general public to low level CO poisoning.
The first item of research is an in-depth analysis of all of the UK media reporting of CO incidents which occurred during the period 1st July 2010 – 30th June 2011. This enables the number of gas and non-gas incidents of CO poisoning to be ascertained and a picture of the causes of these incidents to be formed. CO poisonings that are classed as suicides or the result of fire are not included.
To help go beyond the reported statistics to the potential dangers to health that may be going undetected, the Report also draws on an online survey of 3,000 adults, completed in August 2011 by a sample representative of the entire UK population. It explores their awareness of the symptoms of CO poisoning, how they interact with the health service, and the advice they are given when they do. It also reviews the regional and age differences in these three factors and can therefore highlight where it is most pressing to improve awareness of the effects of CO poisoning.
